What is a denture?

A denture is used to replace one or more missing teeth on a removable plate.  There are several types:

Valplast (nylon resin) partial

A valplast denture is made out of flexible plastic with nylon.  It is the smallest type of denture that can be made to replace a short span of missing teeth.

Plastic (acrylic) partial

A plastic partial denture fits on the gum and sometimes has wire clasps to hold it in place.

Metal (cobalt-chrome) partial

A metal precision partial denture fits exactly with clasps and rests on existing teeth.

Complete denture

These are to replace all the teeth on either the upper/lower or both jaws.  They are held in with suction and made from plastic.

Is a denture right for me?

Dentures are a suitable short-medium term option to replace missing teeth.  There are other options to replace missing teeth which include:

  • Implants - metal screws that go into the jaw bone, and can be used to replace one tooth, or under a complete denture to hold it in position, Treatment can take between 3-12 months to complete.
  • Bridges - an artificial tooth supported by the teeth on either side.
